How to build a capsule wardrobe you’ll actually wear

A small set of pieces that work together makes getting dressed easier. Here is how to start yours.

A capsule wardrobe is simply a small collection of clothes that all work together. Fewer, better pieces mean less time deciding what to wear and more outfits from what you already own.

Start with what you reach for

For two weeks, notice which pieces you wear again and again. Those favourites tell you the colours, fabrics and shapes that suit your life. Build around them.

Choose a calm colour palette

Pick two or three neutrals, such as oat, navy and white, and one or two accent colours. When everything shares a palette, almost every top works with every bottom.

Buy less, choose well, and wear what you love often.

Invest in the pieces you use most

  • A breathable shirt that layers over everything.
  • A bag big enough for a full day.
  • Comfortable, simple shoes you can walk in.
  • One warm layer for cooler evenings.

Edit each season

At the start of each season, take out what you didn’t wear and note any gaps. Fill them slowly, with pieces you will love for years.
