Bouclé comes from the French for curled. The yarn is spun with loops, so the fabric has a nubbly, cloud-like surface you can see from across the room.
Those loops are why it is more practical than it looks: they hide the small marks of everyday life far better than a flat weave, and they do not show the dent where someone just sat.
