How understanding your customers helps you articulate what makes your business valuable.

Most businesses describe themselves by what they do. Customers decide by asking what you will do for them. Strong positioning starts by answering that question better than anyone else.
Talk to recent customers. Ask what nearly stopped them buying, what they compared you with, and what made the difference in the end. Their words are often clearer than your own.
List what makes you distinctive, then cross out anything a competitor could say just as truthfully. What remains, and what customers actually value, is the ground worth standing on.
Positioning is a promise you can keep, made to the people who need it most.
Your market will change, and so will your strongest work. Review your positioning once a year, keep what still rings true, and sharpen what no longer does.
